Black River
While the upper portions are considered too rocky for navigation, canoeing is popular on the central stretch through Jackson and Clark Counties. The river flows through quiet forests to a landing above the dam at Black River Falls. Below the dam, put in at the canoe landing at Third Street and enjoy a gorgeous 30-mile ride to New Amsterdam. Black River Falls Disc Golf Course
This is a small 9-hole course woven through the woods and around the park. The course is meant for the casual player. Six of the nine holes are handicap accessible. Open year round and located at South 5th Street. Call 715-284-4474 for more information.
Black River State Forest
You will find nearly 67,000 acres of pine and oak forest with two forks of the Black River and high sandstone abutments. A permit is required for backpacking. Hike, bike and ski here. Perry Creek Trail is a great ride for novices or those more interested in aesthetics than athletics. You can enjoy an easy roll through stands of pine, aspen, oak and maple on a trail that leads to a mini-gorge where Perry Creek meets the Black River.
