Archaeology Field School at Northland College
Take part in a significant archaeology dig this summer on the shore of Lake Owen, near Cable, south of Ashland. The site was used for Native American seasonal encampments during the Woodland period (1300-1520 A.D.) and the Archaic period (1310-1040 B.C.). Learn skills and research methods archaeologists use - artifact identification, soils evaluation, mapping, and radiocarbon dating. Open to all ages, high school and up. Big Elk Snowmobile Tour
For the past ten years, snowmobiling has been booming in Ashland County. With more than 220 miles of trails and most of the county's population centered in Ashland, there's plenty of solitude on the trails. If you jump off from Clam Lake, you might catch sight of Wisconsin's newest ecological masterpiece - an elk herd. Reintroduced in 1995, the Clam Lake herd is the first to grace northern Wisconsin in 120 years. The forest and bog of the Chequamegon National Forest suit the elk well.
